Seminar 2008 June 9-15, 2008 Concordia University, Portland, Oregon | |
Seminar Theme
“Sleigh bells ring, are you listening? In the lane, snow is glistening. A beautiful sight, we’re happy tonight, STITCHING in a Winter Wonderland!” Come and join your stitching family as we celebrate “Winter Holidays” at Seminar 2008. Your Seminar 2008 Committee and our creative teachers have been hard at work, creating a festive Seminar filled with fun, learning, and friendship. Many of your favorite teachers, and four new ones, have created a sleigh load full of exciting classes with a wonderful mix of themes: Winter Holidays, the hibiscus (our flower of the year), and other simply beautiful designs for any season. Some of the sparkling highlights of Seminar 2008 include: Merchants Mall: Seminar 2008 wouldn’t be complete without the wonderful rooms loaded floor-to-ceiling with Brazilian embroidery stitching delights. Our Merchants Mall will once again be on the fourth floor of East Hall, our dorm building. You can truly shop ‘til you drop in the Merchants Mall, where you will find many “must-have” items that our well-stocked merchant tables have to offer. Show & Share: Friday evening is highlighted by an incredible show of embroidery work done by our fellow stitchers. Truly outstanding and beautiful pieces will be displayed and admired by all. This year a special section will feature pieces that represent our Seminar themes throughout the years. After the show we will retire to the residence hall lounge and enjoy our ice cream social while waiting for the votes to be counted and the announcement of the winners. This is an evening not to be missed! Fashion Show: Once again we will have our famous fashion show, where you will have the opportunity to model your embellished clothing of any and all kinds. Come prepared to “strut your stuff”, and share your embroidered wearables with your fellow stitchers. Expanded Class Length: In the past we have limited Seminar classes to two class sessions in length, but this year we have removed this limit. Our aim is to provide an opportunity for some more complex, detailed class projects to be taught at Seminar. This year for the first time, we have one class that is four class sessions long. We hope to continue this expanded class length option in the future. Fun & Games: A big thank you to Grita Gidner, Pat Kamperschroer, Pat Campbell, and Phyllis Debertin, who have formed a new “Fun & Games” committee for Seminar 2008. They have created lots of neat Winter Holidays fun and games for all of us to enjoy. This new committee highlights our on-going commitment to Seminar fun, as well as creativity, friendship, and learning. Prizes and Special Drawings: Everyone looks forward to receiving gifts during Winter Holidays, and our Seminar is no exception. We’ll have prize baskets, special gifts, and many game prizes to award to our Seminar attendees. Saturday Evening Banquet: This is the grand finale of Seminar 2008. We invite everyone to join us for a Winter Holidays banquet of fun and laughter. The evening will include entertainment and some surprises, too. Dress up in your banquet attire (nothing too formal) and come enjoy our final evening together. We invite you all to come to Portland, Oregon, June 9-15, 2008 and join us as we are enveloped in our Winter Holidays theme. The only snow will be in our imaginations, but we invite you to come and join your stitching family for our “Winter Holidays”. We’ll learn, laugh, be inspired, spend time with old friends, and make new ones. And we promise no one will have to sit at “the little table”. Peggy Daschbach-Martin

The main focus of the class will be learning about Angelina Fiber and the versatility, creativity and FUN of this new fiber. Angelina is a new fusible fiber. It is available in a wide assortment of colors and can be sewn and hand-washed. It is very sparkly, catches and reflects light in slightly different colors as the viewing angle changes. The colors also change a bit according to how much heat is applied and for how long. The fiber fuses only to itself and can be fused using a household iron and a sheet of parchment paper. The creative possibilities are ENDLESS. This fiber has been popular in the quilting world for a couple of years; it’s time to find out what the B.E. world can do with it. In this class we will mostly be experimenting and “playing” with the Angelina fibers. We will also discuss some of the artistic ways and tricks to create depth and compose attractive compositions in a landscape piece. The stitches I used on the “Northern Lights” piece are simple stitches, blanket, straight, fly, French knot, couching, and stacked stem. We will not be learning these stitches in class. Class #TP-6/WP-5/THP-5/FP-5 Garden of Dimension and Light Level/Intensity: A/M-H Second Session Instructor: Jinx Shearer Description: After coming home from seminar last year, I received some lovely notes about my piece that won an award at Show ‘n Share, Garden of Dimension and Light. After talking to many who come to seminar every year and who desired a more advanced piece to do over several class sessions, I have chosen to teach the back panel of Garden of Dimension and Light. Students will learn the basics of a painted background, different foliage, flowers, and trees using different stitches, techniques and fibers. Every cottage will be unique to the student by using fabrics and fibers of their choosing. Painted background, different fibers and threads will create trees and foliage. ![]() | Class #THA-2/THP-1 Hope Chest Level/Intensity: I/M 2 Sessions (Session 1 is 4-hours, Session 2 is 3-hours) Instructor: Charlotte Walker Description: The traditional hope chest is a wooden trunk or box that is used to store special articles of clothing and other household goods for a bride to use when she marries and starts her own home. Traditionally, mothers taught their daughters at an early age how to knit, embroider, sew, and crochet in preparation for marriage. Young women, dreaming of their wedding day, started accumulating a collection of special items, including lingerie, embroidered linens, towels, aprons, quilts, and other handicrafts, and stored them for the future in a special chest, which became a symbol of hope for the future. The new bride then brought her hope chest to her new home on her wedding day, and these items became part of her new household. Have some fun putting flowers and pillows in your hope chest as you do your stitching. This would be a great wedding gift, finished as a pillow or a picture. Stitches used in this design are straight, outline, stem, couching, cast-on, bullion, French knot, drizzle, satin, alternating satin, lazy daisy, detached buttonhole, and double-sided blanket stitch.
