Many years ago our past president, Mary Crichton, presented seminar members each with a packet of Scabiosa seeds, (the pincushion flower) and challenged us all to grow them and come back with a stitched version. This was the beginnings of our "Flower of the Year". Each year thereafter, members put names of flowers in a ballot box, and near the end of seminar, a name is drawn to be the Flower of the Year. All members are encouraged to stitch their version of the flower and enter them in competition at the Show and Share Exhibit at Seminar. For 2011, the Flower of the Year is the orchid So, look at your seed catalogs, check the Internet, and start stitching! Over the years these flowers have been chosen as Flower of the Year: Scabiosa - 1998

Seminar Theme Stitchery To further encourage creativity in stitching, a special award is presented at the Show and Share exhibit for the piece that best represents the seminar theme of the year. The guild president chooses this award. For 2011 the theme is A Floral Bouquet.

Community Outreach BDEIG is once again giving back to the community. This year we are planning on making the small soft pillows that are handed out to women and men (it is rare but it happens) who undergo breast cancer operations. This small soft pillow gives comfort when wearing a seat belt and to keep the arm from putting pressure on the breast. The measurements are 10 ½ ―x 7―, that is the cut size of the fabric. I was told that flannel fabric is the best as it doesnt slip out of place. Pinks and purples are the favorite colors as they go first, but any flannel fabric will do. Make sure that they are not stuffed tightly as they need to be soft. Here is a link to a site on how to make ‗No Sew pillows: http://www.ehow.com/how_4868169_make-sew-pillows.html If desired, some stitching can be added to the pillow.
The BE Handy Helper Brazilian embroidery stitchers are always looking for "a better way". Some of those better ways end up as hints in our newsletter; other handy hints are shared during seminar and local chapter meetings. This year as a Guild fundraiser, we are collecting and organizing as many hints as we can for a booklet that will be available for purchase. Pat Kamperschroer is spearheading this project. Please send your hints to her. The booklet is planned to be printed for the 2011-12 seminar.
