Flower of the Year

Many years ago our past president, Mary-E. Crichton,  presented seminar members each with a packet of Scabiosa seeds, (the pincushion flower) and challenged us all to grow them and come back with a stitched version.  This was the beginnings of our "Flower of the Year".  Each year thereafter, members put names of flowers in a ballot box, and near the end of seminar, a name is drawn to be the Flower of the Year.  All members are encouraged to stitch their version of the flower and enter them in competition at the Show and Share Exhibit at Seminar.

For 2008, the Flower of the Year is the Hibiscus.

So, look at your seed catalogs, check the Internet, and start stitching!

Over the years these flowers have been chosen as Flower of the Year:

Scabiosa - 1998
Peony - 1999
Columbine - 2000 (Chosen for the Columbine High disaster)
Rose - 2001
Fuchsia - 2002
Iris - 2003
Bleeding Heart – 2004
Hosta - 2005
Sweet Pea - 2006
Pansy - 2007

Seminar Theme Stitchery

To further encourage creativity in stitching, a special award is presented at the Show and Share exhibit for the piece that best represents the seminar theme of the year.  The guild president chooses this award.  For 2008 the theme is Winter Holidays.

Make-It, Take-It Brazilian Embroidery Workshop

June 10, 2007 found 17 local ladies interested in finding out a bit about Brazilian Embroidery gathered at Concordia University for our 2nd annual Make-It, Take-It Workshop.  They were introduced to the fun of doing Brazilian embroidery by over a dozen experienced teachers.

The BE Handy Helper

Brazilian embroidery stitchers are always looking for "a better way".  Some of those better ways end up as hints in our newsletter; other handy hints are shared during seminar and local chapter meetings.

This year as a Guild fundraiser, we are collecting and organizing as many hints as we can for a booklet that will be available for purchase.  Pat Kamperschroer is spearheading this project.  Please send your hints to her.  The booklet is planned to be printed for the 2008 seminar.
